MPYO Portraits

All portraits were taken with the EF 85mm f/1.2 L mounted on a 40D body. Natural light only.

Post was done in Adobe Lightroom 2

I was commissioned to take photos of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) during their camp in August. I am not able to show all the pictures yet as we are planning a big photo exhibition at the end of the year in collaboration with the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP). I did however take some impromptu portraits of some of the young musicians in my make shift street studio which basically consist of a table, a stool and a BIG light source (i.e. the sun) which was streaming in beautifully into the hall.

Post shot processing

It’s been awhile since I wrote something here. I have been busy experimenting with new stuff both at the shot stage as well as the processing stage.

I bought the book ‘Skin‘ awhile back and have only been able to look through the book recently and learn new stuff.

I have to say that I wish I had paid more attention to this book especially in the area of processing portrait shots as my output (both prints and for the internet) has changed dramatically. Below are examples of a portrait shot I took during my trip to Cambodia. The image was processed based on what I knew then as far as post processing work is concerned and this was image I uploaded in the internet many almost a year ago.

Directly below the image is the new version based on what I learned from the book. The differences in the look as well as the feel is amazing to me.

Reza Ali Photography – Portrait Portfolio

These are a selection of portraits I have taken. I have chosen portraits to show a variety of styles that I have pursued. Taking a picture is really easy but taking a portrait that shows the essence of a person requires more than technical knowled

This is my 82 year old uncle from Singapore. The one thing I remember about him is that he always had a camera with him. Ever since I can remember he would be taking pictures. I see him on family occasions nowadays and as always never without a camera, an old Minolta. We had a …

Black and white portraits

I am itching to take more black and white portraits especially using 120 film. There’s something about the effort it takes to take black and white in film and then developing it. I took this shot of my friend Sam I think its a cool portrait and catches him in a light mood. The sun …

Leica M6
50mm Summicron f/2.0
Kodak BW400CN
Scanner Canon 4400F

I have finally figured out the best settings for my scanner. And the best setting is to let the machine do its job. When I started scanning a couple of weeks ago I launched the scanner driver and started meddling with brightness, contrast and all that other good stuff and the pictures came out horribly. The scans were blurred, colour was awful and the images were just not worth the time. But I finally figured it out….

Learning to utilise off camera flash has given my portrait work a new dimension. The easiest and quickest setup for me is to use 2 speedlites, 1 master mounted on camera as fill and the other as a slave acting as the main light. The master defaults to group A and set the slave as group B, set the speedlites on eTTL-II and control the ratio between the groups, make sure the main is placed to give a nice shadow effect relative to the fill on camera flash and there you have it.

After a longgggg break from taking portraits (about 2 months which is a lifetime to me. The images I posted in this period were all re-processed from older shoots) I picked up my camera and decided to go for broke. This image was taken as a result of that. One light (580 EX II) with …
