Black and white portraits

I am itching to take more black and white portraits especially using 120 film. There’s something about the effort it takes to take black and white in film and then developing it. I took this shot of my friend Sam I think its a cool portrait and catches him in a light mood. The sun …

I went on walkabout today and went to Central Market hoping to see some unique characters. You can see a lot of artists here who make a living doing streetside portraits. This is one of them.

Pasar Ramadhan

Pasar Ramadhan at Taman Melawati

Leica M6
50mm Summicron f/2.0 wide open
Fuji Superia X-Tra 400
Converted to BW in CS3

Taken at the Pasar Ramadhan of Taman Melawati. During the month of Ramadhan, Pasar Ramadhans (or Ramadhan Bazaars) mushrooms in all housing areas in Malaysia. Something about not eating or drinking the whole day makes us famished. The problem is that most of the time, I’d be suffering from hunger pangs by the time I go to the bazaars and I end up wanting to eat everything.

Featured Portrait – Man from Bus

When I remember my experiences in Cambodia and India and compare the feeling I get when I take pictures of people, I can say that it’s actually quite tougher in KL than anywhere else. Of course, a lot of it is made up in my mind as I feel so self conscious when I go around with my camera in my home city. That’s probably why I have been obsessed with finding a small and discreet camera like the Leica M8. Going around with a pro body and a big lens just doesn’t cut it for me at the moment. Featured Portrait – Little Zein

This one was a tough one to get right. It was in the middle of the day and the sun was high up and harsh. I set the shutter at 1/200 and aperture at f/10 so that the light from the sun was controlled. I then placed a speedlite 580 EXII directly to the boys …

Featured Portrait – Indian Girl at Jaipur

This is another image taken from my January 2008 Tour Of India. This one was taken at Jaipur during one of the walkabouts there. Exploring the back roads of the city (well, actually, every road seems like a back road), I was struck by how friendly everyone was. Sure you get the beggars who won’t …

Featured Photojournalism – Jama Masjid, New Delhi 2008

I took this image during my 2008 Tour of India’s ‘Triangle’ of New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. This one was taken at Jama Masjid in New Delhi. It was mid-afternoon and the sunlight was very nicely diffused making it perfect for these kind of images. The challenge in getting these kind of images is to …

Featured Portrait – Man of Jama Masjid, New Delhi

I am learning some new processing techniques and have been experimenting quite a lot. This one went through some new processes, the most significant of which is the blending of several layers of the image. Basically, you have the primary (background) image. Duplicate it twice. Desaturate the first duplicate and put the blending mode for …

Portraits Of Cambodia

I love this image. The colours have popped out very nicely and the background is very ‘rusty’. This was part of a series of shots I took of the kids in Cambodia. They were lining up one after another and I told them to just squat down and look at the camera. It was mid …
