A pasar malam (night markets) is a kind of bazaar food, clothes and ornaments usually held once a week at any location. The the traders there would often rotate from pasar malam sites all over the particular locality.
One of the biggest change in the way I take pictures when I bought My Leica M8.2 was how easy it was to carry around. Gone are the days when I had to struggle with a zoom lens and another one in my backpack. I now carry a small cloth shoulder bag with some tiny M lenses and an extra battery. Not having equipment get in the way is like a breath of fresh air.
I am itching to take more black and white portraits especially using 120 film. There’s something about the effort it takes to take black and white in film and then developing it. I took this shot of my friend Sam I think its a cool portrait and catches him in a light mood. The sun …
Sometimes, you walk around and something happens in a split second. You have to be ready to take that shot. When I’m just walking around I always have my camera in a ready position which is simply setting it at f/8, adjusting the shutter for correct exposure and focussed at the hyperfocal distance. When something happens I allow myself to react instinctively. Point and shoot. If I have the time I refocus to get maximum sharpness. Most of the time the moment is lost and a second shot is either not possible or not interesting enough.
This is one such occasion. I was at Batu Caves the other day and was about to go home. Batu Caves has a lot of pigeons flying around and I saw a pigeon about to land about 5 meters in front of me. I quickly took my camera to eye level and snapped this shot.
I have processed about 10 rolls of b&w film and there has been a lot of disasters and mishaps. I thought I share this firstly as part of my own learnings but also for the benefit of others.
Thumbprint, scratches, light leak
Well. It had to happen. No matter how careful you are, Murphy will strike. I accidentally exposed a bunch of film when I opened the back of the Leica to insert a fresh roll. Sigh. Ruined some good pictures I think. Must be more careful next time…

Taken at the Pasar Ramadhan of Taman Melawati. During the month of Ramadhan, Pasar Ramadhans (or Ramadhan Bazaars) mushrooms in all housing areas in Malaysia. Something about not eating or drinking the whole day makes us famished. The problem is that most of the time, I’d be suffering from hunger pangs by the time I go to the bazaars and I end up wanting to eat everything.
I saw this image and liked the way all the branches converged almost to a single point. The sky was flat and dull as usual so I decided to go for extreme contrast. This one always meant to be black and white and I metered for the sky and made sure it would come out …
I was inspired to take photographs of building constructions activities. I think it makes for a good practise for starting photojournalism for me. I saw this image as I was driving home and stopped the car. The most chalenging aspect for me is to time the shot perfectly. Its relatively easy to take pictures like …
