Sprint Distance

23 July 2011

I’ve been training for 7 months to get to this stage and this is a validation of all the effort I’ve put in. Obviously I’m still alive enough to write this Race Report. So here goes.

Swim 750m

It’s no secret that I am a weak swimmer. In fact, out of the 3 disciplines of the triathlon, swimming is by far the weakest of them all. I have had several disasters during swim especially in the Hoohathlon as well as the Triathlon Clinic I attended.

This morning I tried something new and went for a warm up swim at the beach for 20 minutes. And actually it felt great. After the swim, I walked slowly from the beach area to the Marina, getting ready for the pontoon start.

I hated the idea of starting from the pontoon. I think it’s because I have to jump right into the deep end. I waited around for 15 minutes before it was time to start swimming. When the horn blew, I didn’t give myself a chance to think about anything and just jumped in. My strategy was to do the breaststroke until I got comfortable with the water. Then I would switch to the freestyle.

When I jumped in I had to make sure that my goggle was tight and that no water seeped in. I could feel just a little droplet of water in my left eye and I hesitated to move forward and actually started to turn back. But I knew if I turned back all sorts of drama could happen so I decided to move forward instead of turning back.

MUSINGS AND THOUGHTS

OK. I have been neglecting writing here for a few days. So now I have to make a quick recap of the activities during the day. Before I do that, the book ‘ReActivate Your Life – How To Make Changes And Achieve Anything You Want In Your Life’ that I’m writing is going well and my new website will be launched next week. I’ve also been working on some audio recording as well as articles about some of the principles I’m going to include in the book.

The other exciting thing is that I have registered as a contributor to ezinearticles.com. I’m still a novice at writing and this is one of the steps I’m taking to improve my writing. Have a look there if you have the time.

Daily Log 25 June 2011 – Pre Race Prep for The Standard Chartered KL International Marathon

Tomorrow is the Standard Chartered KL International Marathon, the premier running event in Malaysia. About twenty thousand people have registered to run for the various races, 42.2 km, 21.1km, 10km and the fun run 5km. I entered the 10km race which is due to flag off at seven o’clock. This will be the second 10km …

MUSINGS AND THOUGHT

‘REACTIVATE YOUR LIFE – HOW TO MAKE CHANGES AND ACHIEVE ANYTHING YOU WANT IN YOUR LIFE’

I am writing a book. There, I said it. I’ve been mulling the idea of penning down what I’ve learnt over the years that has enabled to me to make some major and extra-ordinary changes in my life. I began to write about 2 weeks ago and frankly speaking I didn’t know what to write and how to write it. There’s been days wen I would sit down and stare at the monitor without a clue of what to write about. Recently, the ideas just kept flowing in and them more I write, the more the ideas would come.

I don’t want this to be a conventional book and I am striving to make it different, if not in thee way it is written then in the way I write it. So I’ve decided to start releasing excerpts from the book. The first one can be found on the ReActivate Your Life Facebook Fan Page for the book. Have a read of it. It’s called, ‘Why some changes are doomed to fail’.

MUSINGS AND THOUGHTS

A strange thing happened to me in the pool tonight. I wanted to go swimming after my bike and run workout today. As I was stretching and warming up before getting into the pool, I saw someone getting lessons from the swim coach at the club. I was getting really fascinated by him as I can see that he was really putting his heart and soul into each stroke. I was really getting inspired watching him learn how to swim and was just thinking that I need to get back into that mode if I’m going to improve my swimming.

Weekly Log 13 – 19 June 2011

WEEKLY LOG 13 – 19 JUNE 2011

Lots of things happened last week which was a week full of drama. This is a summary of the weeks activities:

RACE REPORT

HOOHATHLON 19 JUNE 2011

PRE RACE

After last nights disaster, I was hoping that today was free from drama. We arrived at the venue to pick up our race gear at about 6:15. As soon as I arrived, a few people had come up to me and asked, ‘are you Reza Ali’? Unbelievably, it turns out that they were actually people who follow my blog. So for a few brief moments I became a celebrity. The organisers were very enthusiastic about me turning up and had asked if they could interview me. I obliged (which was a big mistake) as I was rambling on and on. I can’t actually remember what I said. I hope the soundbytes are good. This is not the time to look like an idiot.

The most exciting thing for me during the pre race prep was getting my arms marked with my race number. I was told that I was the first one to register so I was given the race number ‘2001’ which I thought was quite cool.

After all that, it was time for me to start preparing my transition area. My bike (being racer 2001) was stationed right at the front near the bike exit area. We had gone through the transition area setup during the Triathlon Clinic and I was eager to put it into practice.

DAILY LOG 18 JUNE 2011

PRE RACE PREP – HOOHATHLON

Tomorrow is the Hoohathlon which is a mini sprint triathlon organised by hooha.asia. It’s got all the trimming of a proper triathlon and it’s touted as a fun triathlon. This will be my first ever triathlon and regardless of how short it is, it gives me a chance to put all these months of hard work to a test.

The Hoohathlon comprises of a 150m swim, a 10km bike and ends with a 5km run. I am used to doing brick workouts of 20km and 5km so I am not expecting any drama for those 2. The swim though only 150m is something I;m really looking forward to. Since the triathlon clinic earlier in the month I have really put in a lot of attention on swimming and despite the numerous setbacks in my swimming, I know that I will be able to get through it. I am not really putting any time for the swim portion though I would be happy to get it done in under 10 minutes. If I face significant challenges in the freestyle I can always revert to the breastroke.

We have checked in at the Putrajaya Pullman Hotel which is fantastic as the race venue is literally 1 3 minute walk away.

Daily Log June 16 2011 – Drama at the swimming pool. I really want to quit swimming

DAILY LOG 16 JUNE 2011

SWIM

I have a love hate affair with swimming and tonight was the hate part of the relationship. I probably spend more time in the pool these days than I do on the bike or running. What frustrates me most is that I don’t seem to be improving. It’s almost as if everytime I take one step forward I take a giant leap back. Well, tonight I had a bit of a blow up during the triathlon swimming workout and I walked out of the pool and went home.
