All portraits were taken with the EF 85mm f/1.2 L mounted on a 40D body. Natural light only.

Post was done in Adobe Lightroom 2

I was commissioned to take photos of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) during their camp in August. I am not able to show all the pictures yet as we are planning a big photo exhibition at the end of the year in collaboration with the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP). I did however take some impromptu portraits of some of the young musicians in my make shift street studio which basically consist of a table, a stool and a BIG light source (i.e. the sun) which was streaming in beautifully into the hall.

I took about 1 minute to take several shots of them. The challenge was to get them to ease up and not be so conscious. I always think that speed is good so that the person being photographed doesn’t have time to be shy and be conscious of how they look. Amazing thing was as soon as they got comfortable I told them the shot was over . I know I had the shot when I got a ‘wow’ from them when they saw how they looked like when I take their picture. Always a big kick.

I think I will make this exact spot my permanent street studio. In the evening the sun streaming in is beautiful….

I have something bigger install at the next camp as I will attempt to take full length body shots with high key background. 100 portraits in 2 hours is my target. Lots and lots of planning to be done before hand but I think the effort will be worth it….
