I took this portrait of Mary in February. It was my first ‘proper’ model photo shoot. To tell you the truth, I didn’t have a clue about what I was doing so I just made things up as I went along. I like this one very much for 2 reasons: firstly because of the tonal range that I managed to get and second because of the connection between Mary and the camera.
This was taken with the 85mm L at f/3.5 1/250 ISO 100 aperture priority. Fill in flash provided by 580 EX and used just to lighten the shadows on her face as the sun was on camera left. I f I were to do it again I would probably taken 2 steps back to get more of the background in. As it is, I think she is too cramped up in the frame. I learnt to always have a view of the end result that you want and frame the image to achieve the end result. To put in another way, if I had thought that I would have made a cropped square of the picture, I would have given her some space in the frame.
